    the external style sheet will hold the styles we create and apply to the html (xhtml)

    You can create inline styles or embedded styles, but they are not re-usable and they add to the code and size of the web page.
    The latest recommendations call for xhtml and css 2.1 using external style sheets.

    Using External style sheets is just one example of “working smarter, not harder”.
